Moving to Scottsdale After the School Year Ends in May 2027? Here's Your Timeline

If you're planning to land in Scottsdale the week after school gets out, you have more time than you think — but one of your deadlines is a lot sooner than you'd expect.

Scottsdale Unified opens its enrollment window for the following school year in early November. So for a May 2027 move, you're applying in November 2026. That's the piece people miss. They start house hunting in February and find out the school they wanted filled up three months earlier.

Here's how I'd map the whole thing out.

Now through October 2026: get your bearings

This is the research phase, and it's worth doing slowly.

Figure out which part of Scottsdale you're actually shopping. The city runs 31 miles north to south and the median sale price swings from around $615,000 in 85257 to nearly $1.9 million up in 85266. Treating it as one market is the most expensive mistake out-of-state buyers make.

Get pre-approved now, even though you're not buying for months. Not because you need it yet — because it tells you your real number instead of your Zillow number.

Early November 2026: school enrollment opens

Scottsdale Unified's open enrollment application typically goes live at 8 a.m. on the first business day of November, and families usually hear back around December 1. Open enrollment is how you apply to a school you're not zoned for, which is exactly your situation when you don't have an address yet.

Confirm the date at susd.org/open before November — it shifts by a day or two each year.

January through February 2027: come see it

Book a trip. Not a vacation — a scouting trip. Drive the commute at 8 a.m. on a Tuesday. Walk the neighborhood at night. Go to the grocery store you'd actually use.

January and February are also when Scottsdale inventory starts building for spring, so you'll have real houses to walk through instead of whatever's left over from summer.

February through March 2027: go under contract

Homes in Scottsdale are currently averaging around 83 days on market, which means you're not in a bidding-war environment. You have room to negotiate and room to think.

Plan on 30 to 45 days from accepted offer to closing. Working backward from a mid-May move, a February or March contract gives you cushion for inspections, repair negotiations, and the one thing that always comes up.

April 2027: close and overlap

Closing in April and moving in May gives you a few weeks of overlap. Utilities on, a couple of loads moved over, the dog settled before the chaos. Worth the extra month of carrying two places if you can swing it.

May 2027: move

Move the week school ends, not the week after. You'll want a buffer before summer really lands.

Which brings me to the thing I'd actually push back on: if you have any flexibility at all, avoid closing and moving in late June or July. It's 110 degrees, it's monsoon season, and hauling boxes in that is genuinely miserable. May is the right call.

One more thing

Your timeline gets easier the earlier you pick a target area. Everything downstream — enrollment, pre-approval, which weekends to fly in — depends on that one decision.

If you want to talk through which pocket of Scottsdale actually fits what you're looking for, reach out. It's the part of the process I like most, and it's free.
